{"id":1792,"date":"2026-02-23T07:51:22","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T07:51:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hydroalpslab.geekworkers.dev\/?post_type=projets&#038;p=1792"},"modified":"2026-02-23T08:00:31","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T08:00:31","slug":"hidestor","status":"publish","type":"projets","link":"https:\/\/hydroalpslab.ch\/en\/projets\/hidestor\/","title":{"rendered":"HiDeStor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Revealing the hidden potential of decentralised hydraulic storage in Switzerland<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pumped storage is currently the most efficient and economical electricity storage solution in the world, accounting for almost 96 % of global storage capacity. In Switzerland, there are 20 large-scale facilities with a total installed capacity of around 4.1 GW. However, with the massive development of photovoltaic energy, electric mobility and heat pumps, needs are evolving towards more efficient storage solutions. <strong>local, flexible storage solutions tailored to distribution networks<\/strong>. An analysis of distribution network operators (DSOs) revealed a need for this type of storage with a capacity of 60 MWh distributed on the network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The HiDeStor project aims to :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify the <strong>hidden potential<\/strong> small and medium-sized pumped storage turbines (MS-PHS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give priority to <strong>existing hydraulic infrastructures<\/strong> (irrigation reservoirs, artificial snow, drinking water, natural lakes, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assess theoretical, technical and economic potential<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide a coherent national map of Switzerland's potential<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>HiDeStor is based on an approach structured into five Work Packages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identifying the needs of stakeholders (DSOs, utilities, public services)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Update of existing inventories (Vaud, Valais)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extension to five more cantons<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technical and economic evaluation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extrapolation of potential on a national scale<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A geospatial approach based on graph theory was used to systematically identify pairs of reservoirs throughout Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project identified :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>27 sites in 7 cantons<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The technical potential of <strong>895 MWh<\/strong>, tailored to the needs identified<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A competitive LCOS of around <strong>0.08 CHF\/kW<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A national extrapolation based on geospatial analysis estimates a theoretical potential of around <strong>1.7 GWh<\/strong> for the whole of Switzerland.
